The two Koreas have completed disarming the Joint Security Area (JSA) in the border area, as part of steps to ease tension and remain consistent with their bilateral pledge to overcome decades of division, according to the South's Ministry of National Defense, Thursday.
For two days from Friday, the United Nations Command (UNC) will verify whether they have withdrawn firearms there. The UNC retains jurisdiction over the southern side of the JSA.
Upon finishing the verification, civilians and foreign tourists are expected to visit the area freely from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The two Koreas also plan to deploy a group of less than 35 "unarmed" soldiers from each side to guard the border area.
