France to destroy its landmines by 2001

France will have destroyed all but 5000 of

its anti-personnel landmines by the end of

next year, the defence ministry said. A spokesman

from the French defence ministry said 706,000

anti-personnel mines were destroyed last

year and nearly 350,000 would be scrapped

this year. 5000 mines were to be retained

to train demining experts. Earlier, a lower

figure was given for those already destroyed.
