13 cops escape death (India)

BERHAMPUR: Nearly 13 policemen had a miraculous escape today after the van, they were going in, got ripped off in a landmine blast near Andheri ghat.


While all the 13 sustained injuries, four of them were seriously hurt, sources said.A group of policemen left Paralakhemundi in three vans this morning and were to reach Katama village for a public relation camp in the Gajapati- Kandhamal bordering villages.At Andheri Ghat while two vans with cops and some men in uniform on motorcycles managed to cross the culvert, the third van with the 13 policemen apparently ran over the landmine resulting in the blast at around 8 am.The blast was so powerful that the six-inch thick concrete slab of the culvert flew into the air and fell on the top of the van.As the news spread, a police force from Adaba and Mohona rushed to the spot and the injured were taken to nearby hospital.Special Operation group IG Sudhansu Sadangi, who reached the spot with a helicopter, air-lifted Dhaleswar Rauta and Simanchal Behera to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here while the two others - B.L. Naidu and Krishna Babu Tamang - were admitted to Paralakhemundi Hospital.Rauta, who is undergoing treatment in the surgery ward of MKCG, said "the sound of the blast was deafening and before we could know what happened chunks of the concrete slab was on top of our vehicle." Meanwhile, forensic experts with scientific officials have reached the spot for investigation.
