27 mines, placed during WWII, found in Estonian waters (Russia)

On September 6, 27 mines were found during sea Open Spirit operation of mine-sweepers near Estonian coast; seven of them were neutralized on the site; REGNUM was informed at the Estonian Defense Forces Headquarters. Majority of the mines was produced during WWII by the Soviet Union; they do not threaten current shipping.


On September 5, mine-sweepers crept at port of Veere; no explosive objects were found.

Sea Open Spirit operation, which will last till September 13, is the biggest sea operation in Estonian territorial waters in 2006. It is aimed at checking safety of main sea routs in the Baltic Sea, which could be threatened by mines of last two world wars. Overall, 27 military vessels from 13 NATO member states, including Estonia, the Great Britain, Germany, France, as well as Russia take part in the operation.
