Afghan, US troops kill 16 suspected Taliban militants
Afghan and US troops in a series of joint operations conducted in southern provinces have killed 16 suspected Taliban over the past couple of days, a US military statement said Thursday. Two anti-tank mines were captured from the militants.
"An estimated 16 enemy combatants were killed by Afghan and US forces Tuesday and Wednesday in southern Afghanistan," the statement noted.
Six of these militants, according to the statement, were killed Tuesday in Shinkay district of Zabul province while the remaining 10 others were eliminated in Uruzgan and Kandahar provinces where hundreds of Taliban fighters have holed up.
A good quantity of arms and ammunitions including six AK-47 assault rifles, rocket propelled grenades and two anti-tank mines from their hideouts were captured, said the press release.
American attack aircraft including A-10 and helicopters, the statement added, were also used to eradicate militants in the area.
Zabul, Kandahar, Uruzgan and the neighboring provinces commonly known as the heartland of Taliban have been the scene of increasing insurgency since beginning this year during which around 1,000 including rebels, Afghan and US troops as well as civilians and pro-government figures had been killed.
