Afghanistan: Multilateral contribution, 17 Dec 2008 (Afghanistan)
Rome December 17, 2008 - "The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Directorate General for Cooperation and Development has contributed with a financial amount of 550.000 euros in response to the "ICRC Emergency Appeal 2009", to support emergency humanitarian response of the ICRC in Afghanistan.
The activities, carried out in consultation with the Afghan Red Cross, will provide supply of food and essential items to IDPs and vulnerable populations affected by armed conflict and drought and will be used for activities aimed at protecting detainees in order to monitor the health and respect for human rights in Herat province.
"The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Directorate General for Cooperation and Development has contributed with a financial amount of 250.000 to the ICRC specifically designed to support prevention activities and physical rehabilitation of landmine victims, in response to the "Special Appeal Mine Action 2009".
The activities encourage the strengthening of seven Rehabilitation Centres operating in Afghanistan coordinated by Dr. Alberto Cairo, head of the ICRC Orthopedic programs in Afghanistan.
