Belarus interested in military cooperation with Canada (BELARUS)

During the meeting it was noted, in recent years Canada has provided
a substantial assistance to Belarus in the military and technical field,
first of all, aid for the utilisation of 300,000 TNT-based antipersonnel
mines.
Besides, in its time Canada presented 20 mine detectors to Belarus.
Those are now used by mine clearance squads of the defence ministry and
the interior ministry.

According to the defence ministry, the cooperation may continue as
Belarus-Canada contacts for the utilisation of 3.6 million PFM-1
liquid explosive mines as well as the training of Belarusian military for
the participation in international peacekeeping efforts. In particular,
Belarus is interested in buying 34 tactical communication radios with
software-controlled frequency tuning for the peacekeeping company.
Belarus is also negotiating with the Canadian side for the acquisition of a
thermal vision device and additional NATO equipment for military transport
aircraft IL-76 (navigation and landing system TAKAN, a friend-or-foe
identification system).

In turn, speaking about Belarus-Canada military cooperation, Michael
McLean expressed confidence, in the future Canada will continue aiding
Belarus' execution of the Ottawa Convention on the Prohibition of
Anti-Personnel Mines and will continue providing other kinds of assistance with a
view to making the Belarusian army a professional one. The official noted,
over the last three years in his position he has been delighted to see the
Belarusian army reforming.

The meeting was initiated by Michael McLean, as his term of office
has expired. In his words, he will continue the military service in
Afghanistan this summer.
