Bomb thrown at military command successfully defused (Turkey)

A package thrown onto the grounds of the Bağcılar Military Recruitment Command in the Güneşli Kirazlı district of western İstanbul early yesterday morning was successfully defused by bomb-disposal teams.

The police said the bomb was a cluster bomb, which had metal scraps and nails added to the shell to make the impact and damage of an explosion stronger. The bomb was found by soldiers keeping watch in the yard, who then informed their superiors.

The identity of the individual or individuals who threw the package containing the bomb has not yet been established, police sources said. The bomb was believed to have been thrown into the compound at around midnight. After cordoning off the area, police teams examined security camera footage, as well as the military command grounds.

An investigation into the incident has been launched, police sources said.
