Brit Kidnapped In Afghanistan; Attack On Convoy Leaves Several Dead
A British engineer was kidnapped after Taliban Mujahideen attacked a convoy in western Afghanistan and killed three police escorts. The Taliban said they carried out the Wednesday night attack that took place on the road between Kandahar and Herat.
Taliban spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi told the Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press that the group's Mujahideen had carried out the attack. He said three Britons had been killed and one arrested, but he later said three Americans had been killed.
"The arrested Briton was also carrying a pistol," he said.
Hakimi did not name the man, but said Mujahideen had seized a car from the convoy and identified the Briton as "David". A spokesman for Afghanistan's NATO force, which has units in the west of the country, said checkpoints had been set up and surveillance aircraft scrambled late on Wednesday.
Taliban Attack On US Convoy Leaves Several Dead
Abdul Latif Hakimi, spokesman for the Taliban told reporters that their Mujahideen carried out an attack on a American army convoy which killed several soldiers and inflicted heavy damage to their vehicles. Hakimi said he is unable to give the exact number of those killed at the time and also reported a landmine attack on an afghan army convoy that injured 6 and completely destroyed the vehicle.
An election candidate Ghazi Nawaz Kani's house was also attacked by Taliban in Khost but he survived, however his brother and son was injured in the attack.
Two Americans Killed In Landmine Blast, 4 Injured
A Taliban landmine exploded in western Afghanistan killing 2 American soldiers and injuring 4 others. According to details, this incident took place in western province of Herat in Shavez district. Taliban spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi told reporters that Taliban had planted the mine the night before based on intelligence reports.
Also a remote-controlled bomb exploded near the southern city of Spin Boldak as a border police patrol passed, police said. Six policemen were wounded according to Spin Boldak police chief Abdul Wasi said. In the district of Gomal, province Paktiya, Mujahideen blew one US military truck and one military tank with roadside bombs, reportedly killing 3 American soldiers and wounding five others In the district of Nobehar, province Zabul, Mujahideen fired rockets at US military jeep and military truck, destroying the jeep and damaging the truck, with reports that a US soldier was killed and four others wounded.
Parliamentary Candidate Killed
Haji Atiqullah, the candidate who had worked for last year's presidential elections, was killed in Tarin Kot district of Uruzgan province, the provincial governor Jan Mohammad Khan told reporters. Earlier this month, Mohammad Karim Qarabaghi, a candidate and former Taliban commander was shot dead in Kabul while four JEMB workers were injured when their vehicle came under an attack in Parwan province.
Fighting Breaks Out Near Kabul
Mujahideen attacked a joint patrol by Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces near Kabul, and an ensuing firefight several wounded. Logar is a small province that borders the capital, Kabul, to the south. Fighting so close to the city is unusual and comes just over a week after a roadside bomb on the outskirts of Kabul struck a convoy of U.S. Embassy vehicles, wounding two American staff members.
