Explosive find (AUSTRALIA)

TWENTY people were evacuated from the Bayersville dump about 3pm yesterday when a Claymore anti-personnel mine was discovered and reported to police.

The emergency situation was over after six hours, with an army warrant officer from Townsville's Lavarack Barracks declaring the device inert about 9pm.

TRI-Q Recycling chairman and Mackay city councillor Greg Thomsen said an employee had found the device, labelled inert, in a load of items about two weeks ago. It had then been placed in an explosives cupboard at the site.

Another employee found the device yesterday and reported it to the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, who then reported it to police, he said.
