Iran to hold military exercises from Friday

Tehran, March 30 (IANS) More than 17,000 Iranian soldiers and 500 naval vessels will take part in a weeklong military exercise off the Persian Gulf from Friday.

Admiral Morteza Saffari, naval force commander of the Islamic Republic Guard Corps (IRGC), said the naval and armed forces as well as volunteer forces would take part in the war games, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The exercises that will begin with the launch of a Shahab II Missile will be held till April 6 off the Persian Gulf, near the port city of Chabahar.

According to Saffari, exhibiting the latest achievements of Iran in defence industries and providing a real atmosphere for the armed forces to display their capabilities were among the objectives of the manoeuvre.

As part of the exercises, Iranian made drones would be flown to collect information from 'enemy camps'.

Sea-to-air missiles, helicopters, rapid reaction boats, Iranian made mines with multi-sensors, naval rocket mine launchers and telecommunication facilities would be among the equipment used during the games.

Iran's announcement of staging the large-scale military manoeuvre comes at a time when the UN Security Council has served a 30-day ultimatum to the country to end its nuclear activities.
