Land mine kills 4 Colombian soldiers (Colombia)


BOGOTA, Colombia Four soldiers were killed, and eight injured, when several land mines exploded while they were on a routine patrol in a rebel stronghold in southwest Colombia, the army said Monday.

The troops were protecting the Salvajina hydroelectric plant 400 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Bogota, Gen. Hernando Perez, head of the army"s third division, told The Associated Press.

Perez said the mines were laid by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, which has been trying to overthrow the government for four decades.
