The blast took place near Vavuniya, the last government-held garrison town ahead of the territory controlled by the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels.

The area's police chief, Gamini Silva, said police were investigating the blast.
Anti-personnel mines are often used by the separatist Tigers, reports the AP.
