NGO clears Iraqi minefield (IRAQ)

MOSUL, Iraq, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- A non-governmental landmine group cleared a field blocking a bridge connecting the Dahuk and Mosul governorates in Iraq at the request of Kurdish officials.

The British NGO Mines Advisory Group worked at the formal request of the Kurdistan Regional Government to clear a minefield blocking a main trade route to Syria and a main water project, a statement from the group said.

The group said it removed one anti-tank mine and 12 anti-personnel mines from the area using armored machinery.

The statement said the group employed mechanical devices to remove the mines because the minefield's location near a river made other means potentially hazardous.

The group operated under a grant provided by the U.S. State Department's Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement, the statement said.
