Officials: 2 police killed, 6 wounded in Chechnya (Caucasus)
ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia: Russian officials say two law enforcement officials died and six others were injured in a clash between militants and police in Chechnya.
The Russian Interior Ministry's branch in Chechnya says in a statement that the fighting started Thursday when police tried to detain two suspected rebels in the eastern city of Argun. The statement says the suspected rebels also died.
Large-scale battles in Chechnya ended years ago, but small group of rebels continue to stage regular attacks against federal forces and local authorities. Neighboring North Caucasus provinces also have been plagued by violence.
Police spokesman Mark Tolchinsky says four police officers were also wounded Wednesday in the province of Dagestan east of Chechnya in landmine explosions staged by militants.
