Plant Design? (Denmark)

Normally, explosives are traced down by analyzing geologic samples in laboratories, using metal detectors or by trained dogs - an expensive and time consuming activity.

Welcome to the world of plant design, at the university of Copenhagen a Danish researcher is genetically changing a plant in such a way that it changes of color in case of surface pollution typical for antipersonnel mining.

The color change of the plant (so called Red Detect) seems to be visible after three weeks with accurate positioning of explosives. The plant is considered a quick and low-cost alternative to current mine detection methods.

For your information, worldwide some 100 million landmines are still hiding underground killing 26.000 people yearly - reason enough for serious gardening
