Pranab Mukherjee Urgently Visits Colombo to Demand Explanation for the Use of Cluster Bombs in Vanni that Killed 300 and injured 1000 Civilians (Sri Lanka)
India's foreign minister and acting Prime minister Pranab Mukherjee is set to visit Sri Lanka today (Tuesday, 27 01 2009) as it is said that Sri Lankan forces on Monday used cluster bombs in Vanni killing 300 people and injuring more than 1000 civilians. Pranab Mukherjee was apprised of the use of cluster bombs and on Monday night he suddenly decided to visit Colombo urgently, some informed sources revealed.
India's PTI news service reported that Pranab Mukherjee was expected to meet Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse to push for a lasting political solution to the long-running ethnic conflict. But informed sources say that he decided to visit Colombo hearing the carnage in Vanni. Tamils' political sources charge the Sri Lankan military's attack on civilian population in Vanni as genocide.
TamilNet on Monday published direct eyewitness accounts from the street of Udaiyaarkaddu, Vanni.
In a scene of carnage of untold proportion on civilian targets hit by hundreds of Sri Lanka Army fired artillery shells, more than 300 people have died and several hundreds are bleeding to death within the last 24 hours, amidst pouring rain inside the 'saftey zone' declared by the Colombo government. Houses and vehicles burn for a stretch of three km between Va'l'lipunam Kaa'li temple and Moongkilaa'ru towards Paranthan road, reports from Vanni said on Monday. Unattended bodies and injured people unable to move are lying around everywhere, while a remaining doctor fled and helpless ICRC officials virtually cried at the scene from their bunkers, TamilNet reported quoting its correspondent.
