Six soldiers serving with Russian federal forces in Chechnya were killed in clashes with separatist rebels since Friday, according to a toll provided to AFP on Saturday by a source in the pro-Moscow Chechen administration.

Seven other Russian troops were wounded in the attacks, the source reported.

The Russian forces were attacked by rebel gunfire, including one skirmish near the border with the republic of Dagestan.

In another incident, a military truck hit a landmine near the village of Kurtchaloi near the south of the republic.

Chechnya continues to see daily armed clashes, six years after Russian troops stormed the territory in October 1999 to re-establish control. That followed defeat in a first war against separatist guerrillas in 1994-96.
