Army troopers foiled over the weekend the attempt on the life of an Antique mayor when they engaged in a gunfight a band of communist rebels who were supposed to carry out the assassination in San Remegio town.

Maj. Bartolome Bacarro, Army spokesman, said patrolling soldiers chanced upon the rebels at around 12:45 a.m. on Saturday while the latter were planting landmines on a provincial road in Maragudbod village, San Remegio town.

"After 10 minutes of firefight, the armed rebels withdrew towards different directions," said Bacarro, adding that there were no reported casualties from both sides.
