Al Silait region in east Khartoum yesterday witnessed the destruction of 4488 landmines from the landmine research. That was done by a team from the armed forces. Minister of Defence, Lt. General Abdel Rahim Mohamed Hussein announced that Sudan will be free from landmines by 2014.
He stated that a celebration will be held in Wau town during next July on occasion of cleaning the Babanousa/Wau railway line from landmines. The Minister stated that about (300) kilometers of the (400) kilometers road were de-mined.
While addressing the celebration of the declared reserve of landmines, he asserted Sudan's commitment towards the Ottawa Agreement of prohibiting the use of anti-personnel landmines in war. He explained that next April, the armed forces will destroy its reserve of landmines which totals to 14,485 before 2014.
The Minister of Defence revealed that humanitarian affairs official, Maulana Ahmed Hassan who is the General Secretary for the national organ for fighting landmines is concerned about the destruction of landmines. He however said the destruction of the landmines reserve reflects the government's commitment towards its pledges and charters in respect of executing agreements. This sends a signal that peace had become a reality. General Hussein drew attention towards the fact that support of the international community falls within the frame of achieving the objective of Sudan which is free from landmines.
