United Nations - Eliminating Danger
Mali
85 SA3 Ground to Air Missiles were stored in the centre of Bamako, Mali. An UNMAS team of explosive disposal experts, transfer, dismantle and destroy this stockpile.
Weapons proliferation is one of the cold war's most enduring legacies. Many countries retain sophisticated arsenals, much of it unused for decades and stored in precarious conditions. Decades after the initial construction, some warehouses and storage facilities are unsecured and derelict. As towns and cities expand, arms depots are not uncommonly found in population centres near schools and hospitals. The Government of the Republic of Mali requested assistance from UNMAS to transfer, dismantle and destroy 85 missiles that had been stored in Bamako. This film tells the story of the destruction of these weapons.
